Police Smashing Windows At OBH Cottesloe. 13/02/2002.
On my way to work this morning I see an unusual sight. Police have cordoned off the area around The Ocean Beach Hotel on Eric St. and are smashing the upper storey windows from the inside out. I have to stop the car in the middle of Marine Parade, right next to a police officer to take the photo from my car and one is all I dare take.
Broken glass covers the pavement.
It occurrs to me that Mr Quinlivan has fallen behind in his protection payments and Karl O'Callaghan has sent the boys round to put the frighteners on him, but it turns out that the windows are being smashed to assess their load-bearing capacity in connection with a murder case where someone was recently thrown out of the hotel window, what the French would call de-fenestrated.
My old mate Dave (Flash) Gordon used to clean these windows for another window cleaning mob and it seems strange to witness such a detached and methodical approach to this unusual task. I am glad I filmed and posted this before the 5 o'clock news.
